Why We Choose Malarkey
Why New Generation Roofing installs Malarkey roofing systems, and how we talk homeowners through the options.
Granule loss, shingle deterioration, cracking, leaks and other signs of aging are some of the common problems we look for when evaluating an older roof. When we chose the roofing system we build with, those are the conditions we had in mind.
Rubberized asphalt instead of standard asphalt
Malarkey shingles are built on NEX polymer-modified — rubberized — asphalt. Malarkey publishes up to 35% greater tear strength and up to 65% greater granule adhesion than the ASTM D3462 industry standard. Those are the two numbers that map directly onto how roofs in this climate actually wear out.
Built for wind-driven rain
Up to 50% more laminate bonds to resist delamination, and double rain seals. If you live in Troutdale or Sandy, or anywhere the wind lines up with your roof, you already know why that matters — sideways rain finds every detail a calm-weather roof never has to handle.
Impact ratings that matter on wooded lots
Impact ratings vary by product line: some Malarkey architectural shingles carry a Class 3 rating and certain products are rated Class 4, the highest classification. On acreage in Boring with Douglas fir overhead, that is a practical consideration — we will tell you which line carries which rating.
A design that helps the crew install it right
Up to a 2x wider nailing area. That sounds like a small thing until you have watched what causes blow-offs: fasteners placed slightly wrong. A shingle designed to be easier to fasten accurately is a shingle more likely to perform the way it was tested.
Made in Oregon since 1956
Malarkey has been manufacturing here for roughly 70 years, with a stated principle of building the shingles they would want on their own homes. They also build upcycled rubber and plastics into the shingle and use smog-reducing granules — not why we chose them, but a real bonus.
You can read the full detail on our Malarkey roofing page, and if you are weighing a replacement, our roof replacement page walks through the whole process.
