Emerald Pro Malarkey Roofing Contractor

Most roofing companies will install whatever the supply house has on the truck. We made a decision instead: Malarkey lists New Generation Roofing as an Emerald Pro contractor, certified since2024, and Malarkey polymer-modified shingle systems are what we build with. We serve homeowners in Happy Valley, Clackamas, Boring, Sandy, Troutdale, East Portland and Gresham.

The reason is not brand loyalty. Granule loss, cracking, leaks, and other signs of shingle deterioration are some of the common problems we look for when evaluating an aging roof. Malarkey engineers specifically against those failure modes, and they have been doing it in Oregon since 1956.

Company philosophy

Why New Generation Roofing Chooses Malarkey

Every figure below is published by Malarkey. We are not going to run down other manufacturers — we would rather tell you what we picked and why.

Rubberized asphalt instead of standard asphalt

Malarkey shingles are built on NEX polymer-modified (rubberized) asphalt. In homeowner terms: the shingle stays more flexible instead of getting brittle, and Malarkey publishes greater tear strength and granule adhesion than the ASTM D3462 industry standard. Granule loss, shingle deterioration, cracking, leaks and other signs of aging are some of the common problems we look for when evaluating an older roof.

Built with wind-driven rain in mind

Malarkey's architectural shingles are designed with extra laminate bonding and sealing details aimed at wind-driven rain. Exactly which features apply depends on the shingle line, and we will tell you what your roof is getting.

Impact resistance where it is useful

Impact ratings vary by product line — some Malarkey architectural shingles carry a Class 3 rating and certain products are rated Class 4, the highest classification. If you are on a wooded lot, we will tell you which lines carry which rating rather than generalizing.

Installation-friendly design

A wider nailing area helps a crew fasten accurately, and accurate fastening is what actually keeps shingles on a roof. Materials only perform if they are installed correctly.

An Oregon manufacturer since 1956

Malarkey has been making shingles in Oregon for roughly 70 years. We would rather install a product made for and tested in this climate.

Sustainability built into the product

Malarkey uses upcycled rubber and plastics in its shingles and offers smog-reducing granule technology on qualifying products. It is not why we chose them, but it is a genuine bonus.

Product lines

Malarkey Roofing Systems

We work in Malarkey's architectural shingle lines, which cover the large majority of residential roofs in our service area. Which line and color makes sense depends on your roof, budget, and the look you want.

  • Highlander®

Malarkey's most economical architectural shingle, with a Class 3 impact rating. Highlander AR adds granules that help reduce algae streaking.

  • Vista®

An architectural shingle in Malarkey's most popular styles, built on the same NEX rubberized asphalt.

  • Legacy®

Malarkey's premium architectural shingle line. We will go over what it adds over the other lines for your specific roof.

Current specifications, colors, and availability are published by the manufacturer at malarkeyroofing.com.

The full system

Roofing Materials and Components

A roof is a system, not a stack of shingles. When we build one, the components are chosen to work with the shingle rather than to hit a price.

  • Underlayment and ice-and-water protection at vulnerable areas
  • Starter and ridge/hip products matched to the shingle system
  • Ventilation products to keep heat and moisture moving out of the attic
  • Flashing and sealants at chimneys, skylights, walls, and pipe penetrations

Malarkey Secure Choice™ roofing systems

Malarkey runs a Secure Choice™ program for qualifying roofing systems, which can provide enhanced or extended warranty protection when the requirements of the applicable program are met. Eligibility depends on the products, accessories, and installation used on your specific roof — so ask us about qualifying Malarkey Secure Choice™ roofing systems and available warranty protection during your estimate, and we will tell you plainly what your roof does and does not qualify for.

Not every roof qualifies, and no Malarkey program applies automatically. Current program requirements and warranty terms are published by Malarkey; we hand you the applicable documents in writing with your estimate.

Malarkey roofing for Pacific Northwest homes

Our climate does not test roofs with extremes; it tests them with months of moisture, organic growth, and wind-driven rain. Flexibility instead of brittleness, granules that stay put, real sealing against sideways rain, and adequate ventilation are what matter here — which is why this is the system we build with. More on that in what makes a good roofing system for Pacific Northwest weather.

I am truly amazed and thrilled with the terrific job the crew did when they replaced my roof this week!! It took them less than 2 days to completely tear off and replace the entire roof on my 1100 sq.ft home. They cleaned up so well — it looked like they were never there! I LOVE my new roof!!

FAQ

Malarkey questions homeowners ask

What does it mean that you are a Malarkey certified contractor?

We are an Emerald Pro certified contractor — Malarkey's certified installer level. Practically, it means Malarkey has certified us to install their systems, which is what allows their manufacturer warranty coverage to apply to the roofs we build. You get the specifics in writing with your estimate.

Is Malarkey better than other shingle brands?

We are not going to run down other manufacturers — there are good shingles from several of them. What we will say is why we choose Malarkey: rubberized asphalt that stays flexible, published tear strength and granule adhesion above the industry standard, impact-rated options, and a company that has manufactured in Oregon since 1956.

Which Malarkey shingles do you install?

We work in Malarkey's architectural shingle lines, which cover most residential roofs in our service area. Which line and color makes sense depends on your roof, your budget, and the look you want — we will walk through the options during your estimate.

Does Malarkey help with moss and algae?

Algae-resistant granule options are available on certain Malarkey lines, which help reduce algae streaking. No shingle prevents moss in the Pacific Northwest on its own; that still takes keeping the roof clear of debris and having growth removed before it thickens.

What warranty comes with a Malarkey roof?

Two separate warranties. Malarkey issues the manufacturer warranty on the materials — limited lifetime coverage, with the non-prorated period depending on the shingle line and system installed. Separately, New Generation Roofing provides its own 10-year workmanship warranty on the installation. They are not the same warranty, and the exact coverage for your roof comes in writing with your estimate.

Do you install other brands?

Malarkey is our preferred shingle manufacturer and what we recommend. If you have a specific reason to want something else, tell us during the estimate and we will have a straight conversation about it.
